A new weekly series has begun airing on WSCS ” A Closer Look” is a public affairs program hosted by WHBL’s Rusty Mehlberg. The first show featured guest Todd Priebe, Sheboygan County Sheriff, talking about Law Enforcement and the use of body cameras.  ” A Closer Look” airs on WSCS on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and Mondays at 12:00 p.m. Stay tuned to WSCS and WHBL for the next  airing of “A Closer Look.”

On the recent Third Saturday event held at the Sheboygan County Historical Museum the topic was, Hmong Heritage in Sheboygan County. Featured were performances by traditional Dance and Qeej players, Needle point farming tools and local Hmong history.  This program can now be seen on WSCS regular scheduled time and on Video on Demand.

On this month’s First Friday Forum presented by the Sheboygan Chamber of Commerce featured the topic of a National Marine Sanctuary designation for the Sheboygan Lake Michigan area.  Guest speaker, Ellen Brody, Regional Coordinator Great Lakes and Northern Region , National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA). Brody talked about shipwrecks located in Lake Michigan and the Alpena National Marine Sanctuary in Thunder Bay. Sheboygan is currently in the designation process of being listed as a Wisconsin National Marine Sanctuary.

Area children, parents were invited to an ‘explosive’ Cool Chemistry Night.

The University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan invited the community to attend an educational, exciting — and somewhat explosive — evening of “Cool Chemistry” on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at the Fine Arts Theatre.

UW-Sheboygan chemistry students performed and described fascinating, attention-grabbing experiments. The audience experienced some big “bangs” and flames throughout the evening, . Kids were also given the opportunity to create something “cool” to take home after the show with the help of UW-S chemistry students.

This popular annual UW-Sheboygan event, aims to increase interest in science among elementary and middle school-age children, and once again be organized this year by Dr. James Kabrhel, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, with assistance from Dr. Karrie Rukamp, Chemistry lecturer.

The community demonstration will allow UW-Sheboygan students to gain valuable public speaking experience, as well as practice their knowledge of common chemistry-related experiments, Kabrhel said.

The “Cool Chemistry” event will offer UW-Sheboygan Chemistry students a beneficial experience that goes beyond the traditional classroom work, Kabrhel said.

“Demonstrating simple experiments in front of an audience allows the students to step into a teaching role, which is a very important part of the learning process,” he explained. Watch “Cool Chemistry on WSCS Channel 990, Un-Verse 99, and on WSCS Video On Demand.

WSCS Receives Midwest Awards

 WSCS, the City of Sheboygan Community channel is the proud recipient of four Best In the Midwest Video Fest Merit Awards, to be presented at the Wisconsin Community Media (WCM) Annual Spring Conference in Milwaukee on April 30, 2015.

Quality of Life, produced by Dave Augustin, featured guests Dr. Mark Bettag and cancer survivor Tamaney Augustin talking about oncology.

Senior Connection, produced by Wendy Schmitz, featured guests Andrea Avery with artists Max Maker and Robert Karimi talking about the John Michael Kohler Arts Center Culinary Art Truck project.

City Desk: Benjamin Moore Project produced/hosted by Mike Vandersteen and Don Hammond, featured Chad Pelishek, City Development Manager, talking about the Main Street Matters project and how Sheboygan was selected as one of twenty communities in the country to receive the downtown makeover.

Healthy Relationships: Military Families, hosted and produced by Deb Wolniak. This program featured Lauren Platfoot of Military Families Connect talking about their services to help military families in need.

WSCS is proud to continue to provide local programming for the Sheboygan area and beyond,  since June 1982.

The City of Sheboygan is updating it’s 5-year Comprehensive Park, Recreation and Open Space Plan. This plan is used as a work plan, so that we may qualify for State and Federal grants. For the next month residents can provide input by taking a survey about the strengths and needs of Sheboygan’s existing park system.  Your response will be used to help the City prioritize projects over the next five years. WSCS will soon begin the process of  installing new camera equipment in the mobile production truck. This upgrade will improve the overall quality of WSCS programming.

Construction continues on the new University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan estimated $1.4 million engineering building on the UW-Sheboygan campus.

The new 7,000+-square-foot building will provide classroom and lab space for students participating in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville onsite collaborative degree program in Engineering, as well as for UW-Sheboygan pre-engineering students.

Local students access live instruction on the UW-Sheboygan campus with UW-Platteville engineering professors. Lab work is currently being completed in a temporary lab on the campus or by commuting to UW-Fox Valley Valley, a nearby UW College campus also participating in this degree partnership. The new building will provide a state-of-the-art lab environment for students studying mechanical and electrical engineering.

In addition to the labs, the new facility will feature several new offices for engineering faculty and program academic advisers and a study area. Labs will offer hands-on learning in mechanical and electrical engineering.

The engineering building is a reality due to the generosity of the Sheboygan County Board of Supervisors and donors Plastics Engineering Company (PLENCO), the Frank G. and Frieda K. Brotz Family Foundation and Curt G. Joa, Inc. The UW-Sheboygan Foundation spearheaded a major fundraising campaign to secure the private donations needed to help construct the building.

The new building is expected to open to students in fall 2015.
