Dose of Reality

Posted on: January 5th, 2016 by Robert Ingraham

Back in September the State Department of Justice began their statewide “Dose of Reality” campaign to bring more attention to opiate overdoses and addictions to this chemical, either by using heroin or abusing prescription drugs.

Now with some funds in place, several local entities are coming together to begin a localized effort.  This will include Sheboygan County departments, law enforcement, schools, and health care providers.

Sheriff Todd Priebe says the effort will be two-pronged.  One is to bring attention to those who are suffering from addiction. They can fall into two groups, ones that have struggled with addiction throughout their life, and those who become addicted after taking prescribed pain medication.

Liz Abler, Public Health Nurse with the Sheboygan County Department of Health and Human Services, says addiction comes from the effect of the drug on a person’s brain. Part of the problem did come from the wide use of prescribing pain medication by doctors in the 1990s.

The second approach the local program will do is bring added attention to how family and friends of those suffering from an addiction.  Priebe says that people have the misconception that they can’t do anything, but indeed they can when it comes to starting the detox process.

The official start of the local “Dose of Reality” program will begin in January.

Exhibit features local artist Keary Kautzer

The Sheboygan community is invited to visit the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery for its latest art exhibition, “Keep It Simple IV” by local artist and photographer Keary Kautzer.  An opening reception is planned for Thursday, November 12, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery. The public is invited to attend.

Keary Kautzer works for the City of Sheboygan as the Director of WSCS.

Kautzer’s original paintings are mainly in watercolors, depicting water and landscape scenes, mostly painted en plein air in the style of the American Modernists.  Kautzer’s paintings are his visual record of where he has been and what he has seen.

Kautzer’s mentor, James Michael always stressed “Keep it simple,” and that is his goal with each painting.

Kautzer is a member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society, Water’s Edge Artists, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Wisconsin Plein Aire Painters Association, and the Sheboygan Visual Artists.

All artwork will be on display from November 2-30, 2015.  The Fine Arts Gallery is open Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is located inside the Fine Arts Building on the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan campus.

City of Sheboygan Leaf Collection

Posted on: October 6th, 2015 by Robert Ingraham

City of Sheboygan residents can start to leave leaf piles in the curb for pick-up by the Sheboygan Public Works Department.

Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation Jason Blasiola says residents must follow their map that splits up Sheboygan into sections designation which areas will have leaves picked up that day.  The typical week will see street crews picking up leaves from south to north as the week progresses.

Blasiola says anyone leaving leaves should make sure there is space between the curb line or block catch basins so that water can still flow, and also keep piles from getting to high to block the vision of drivers and pedestrians.  Also, the city does not want branches, sod and general yard waste with the leaves since this will clog their machines.

Blasiola says residents can do their own leaf removal, by bagging up leaves and taking them to the city’s drop off site Monday through Saturday.

Blasiola also recommends people can mulch their leaves when mowing, giving their lawn a natural fertilizer.

National Marine Sanctuary Designation

President Obama, NOAA Announce Advancement of Proposed Lake Michigan National Marine Sanctuary Designation in Wisconsin
The Cities of Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Two Rivers jointly announced today that the regional nomination for a National Marine Sanctuary, submitted by Governor Scott Walker on behalf of the citizens of Wisconsin, has been officially selected by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to begin the sanctuary designation process. The selection was announced by President Barack Obama as part of a video message shared during the annual “Our Ocean” global conference being hosted this year in Valparaiso, Chile.
“This represents an extraordinary milestone for all Wisconsinites in our collective effort to bring a National Marine Sanctuary to the central shores of our state,” stated City of Port Washington Mayor Tom Mlada. “We are immensely grateful to our partners at NOAA for advancing our nomination and moving us closer to final designation.”
“Our four communities have worked extremely hard in partnering on this effort and best position us for eventual success, engaging with core staff from the Wisconsin State Historical Society and Wisconsin Coastal Management Program,” said City of Sheboygan Mayor Mike Vandersteen. “Working together, we’ve prepared and submitted a very robust nomination.”
The regional nomination as submitted to NOAA detailed a proposed 875-square mile area National Marine Sanctuary, stretching from Port Washington to Two Rivers. The Sanctuary would be only the second in the Great Lakes and the 14th in the United States. It would contain 39 known shipwrecks, including the two oldest shipwrecks in Wisconsin and 15 intact shipwrecks (three with standing masts). Fifteen of the 39 shipwrecks are on the National Register of Historic Places.
“A National Marine Sanctuary in our Mid-Lake Region will be a huge economic boon for our four communities and the region, but more importantly, it will serve as a tremendous source of pride and basis of celebration for our entire State of Wisconsin,” said City of Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels.
“We believe a Sanctuary designation is truly fitting,” stated Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley. “Our marine environment is enormously rich in historical, cultural, and archaeological treasures, and a National Marine Sanctuary will afford greater opportunity for discovery, protection, and preservation of those unique treasures.”
NOAA will now officially commence with the sanctuary designation process for the proposed area. Designation occurs as a public and participatory process that can take a year or more to complete. The first step is for NOAA to hold public scoping meetings. These meetings will be held on November 17th in Manitowoc, November 18th in Port Washington, and November 19th in Sheboygan.
