PRESS RELEASE 2016 Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series to move to JMKAC Festival Green

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 11, 2016)

SHEBOYGAN, WI – The 2016 Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series will be held on the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Festival Green, located at the intersection of the Wisconsin Avenue and N. 7th Street. The new location is immediately east of the concert series’ previously announced location (the former Boston Store property).

The change is necessitated by the unforeseen need to remediate the site by removing concrete and other debris that was buried on the site after a fire burned the Prange’s department (prior to the Boston Store) store building in 1970s. Plans are underway to construct a new $10.3M residential housing complex with 8th Street retail as well as permanent green space configured for concerts and performances. This fall, the City plans to construct a creative Arts Green complete with amphitheater style seating, landscaping, and sidewalks to connect the Mead Public Library/8th Street to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

“We have an exciting line-up planned for the free concerts this summer. The change of location is for one year, as the City prepares the original site for an exciting 2017 concert series,” explains Ann Brusky, senior manager of public programming at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

The Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series schedule will not change. Ten concerts will take place from June 16 through August 18 with the anticipated audience for each concert remaining at 1,200 to 1,500 attendees. During the concerts, Wisconsin Avenue from N. 6th Street to N. 7th Street will be closed as well as N. 7th Street from New York Avenue to Wisconsin Avenue.

“Infill redevelopment in a downtown can be a challenging task. Decades ago when older buildings were demolished, concrete and debris was often pushed into the basement and covered over. It is not until soil borings were completed that this material was located, revealing the need for additional work to prepare the site for the new development” stated Chad Pelishek, director of planning and development with the City of Sheboygan.

The Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series is supported in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, a private family foundation that empowers towns and cities across America to transform neglected public spaces into thriving destinations through the power of free, live music.
